SKI - GREECE
Winter & Alpine Sports
For the enlightened, skiing holidays in Greece and the Balkans are fast becoming the rage. Far from the
madding crowds of the Alps and the Tyrol, the mountains of Greece are quickly developing and improving
their ski facilities to cater for the winter sports enthusiast. The efforts of recent years to develop Greek
winter sports and a viable highland and alpine tourism have paid off, and many facilities have already
been constructed. Some of these facilities come highly recommended whilst others still operate at fairly
primitive levels.
Ski centres can be found at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,500 meters, ranging from single lift facilities
catering mainly for locals to the popular Mt. Parnassos site that draws many of its enthusiastic patrons
from the greater Athens area. Parnassos, located close to ancient Delphi, boasts some 13 lifts and
nearby accommodation ranging from village inns to luxury hotels and holiday villas. The ski season in
Greece is usually under way by early December and continues through to the mid to late spring. During
the late season it is entirely feasible to ski in the morning and then enjoy a swim in the sea during the
afternoon, bolstered by a glass or two of ouzo or retsina, the heady Greek resinated wine.
Information for the ski centres located at Parnassos, Helmos, Karpenisi, Metsovos and Pilion may be
obtained via the Ski Pages of Acropolis.net.
