ATHENS METRO
Underground in Athens

The long awaited Athens Metro is scheduled to start services for the general public at the end of January 2000. Initially, services will take place on the Sepolia-Syntagma line linking the Pentagon military headquarters on Mesogheion Avenue with the present Omonia square station of the Piraeus to Kifissia electric railway service. The route takes in 8 stations including the main Syntagma Square in the heart of Athens, journey time is said to be 15 minutes which compares with a 40 minute car drive in hectic trafic conditions.
Two new lines are currently under construction and will be integrated with the existing Piraeus line, original built in 1869 as a suburban rail line connecting Athens with the port of Piraeus. Attiko Metro S.A. will operate the new Athens Metro with a service frequency of 5–10 minutes and every 3 minutes during peak hours.
