SCUBA-GREECE
Diving in the Greek Seas
Planning a visit for business or just for fun? Whatever your reason for visiting Greece the exciting underwater world of the blue Mediterranean awaits you. Ask any diver and they will tell you about their wondrous experiences of diving into the unknown world of the deep. The Greek seas are recorded as being the cleanest in the Mediterranean, visibility is often very good and water temperature ranges from 25 Celsius in summer to 12 Celsius in the winter. Depending on the area chosen, Greece offers an almost year round programme of diving. So for the experienced and beginner alike these waters offer a unique challenge providing that the diver has undergone the correct training.
Assuming that regulation equipment is used scuba diving is permitted in most coastal areas except for those prohibited by law due to military installations or as a means of protecting archaeological resources. The protection of archaeological sites is a touchy subject in Greece and any discovery of ancient remains in the course of diving must be immediately reported to the nearest office of the Hellenic Ports Authority. Furthermore, it is prohibited for any archaeological remains found in the Greek seas to be brought to the surface without the express permission of the Ministry of Culture.
The responsibility authority for scuba diving in Greece is the Hellenic Federation of Underwater Activities, Sports Fishing and Technical Swimming:
