CLUBBING - GREECE
Athens by Night

After Dark - Athens has long been regarded for it's nightlife and the city offers a variety of programmes that are comparable with other major European cities such as Paris, Madrid or Rome. In the winter there is a strong club scene featuring all kinds of music from ethnic Greek Bouzouki, Folk Rembetica to Jazz, Blues, Rock, Techno and Mainstream. Nowadays clubs are spread throughout the suburbs but city centre venues are still in vogue, including the popular Psiri neighbourhood located close to the city's market and wholesale trading districts.

In summer the nightlife migrates to the streets and other open-air locations when entertainment takes on a whole new meaning, and in this period it is possible to see many world class acts at one of city's outdoor auditoriums. Apart from the renowned Athens Festival, which caters mainly to the classical enthusiast, there are organised Jazz and Rock festivals thus providing for almost every taste. The two most popular concert venues are, the historic Odeon of Herod Atticus located next to the Acropolis and the 4000-seater Lycabettos Amphitheatre on scenic Lycabettos hill.

Many city bars & clubs are closed during the month of August when there is a mass exodus from the city in favour of the islands. However, there are large disco style nightclubs located in the coastal suburbs that do remain open, offering both indoor and outdoor entertainment. Good places to look for information are the Greek language Athenoroma magazine which caries an extensive listing and also the entertainment pages of the daily Athens News and weekly Hellenic Star newspapers, both published in English. Because many clubs are seasonal it is a good idea to first check by phone to make sure that they are open.
