ATHENS AIRPORT
Into the 21st Century

The new Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" is now scheduled for opening during the late spring of 2001. Situated at a distance of 18 km from Athens, the new airport will supersede the existing facilities at Hellenikon. The airport is many years in the making and the early planning stages date as far back as the late 1970's.
Although being a late arrival, the new airport has benefited from international
funding and the very latest technology. Some of the features of the airport are:
- a parallel runway system allowing simultaneous take offs and landings
- minimum peak traffic of 65 movements per hour or about 600 per day
- 89 aircraft stands
- 24 passenger-loading bridges
- a highly reliable baggage conveying system with 15 baggage claim belts
- service for up to 16 million passengers per year in the first stage
Designed for the 21st Century, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport will initially be connected to the national road network via a new 6-lane motorway link, scheduled for opening at the same time as the airport, and it is hoped that the new Athens/Imittos peripheral motorway link will open during 2002. Other transportation services include a new suburban train route connecting to existing intercity services and also the newly opened Athens Metro.
